November 2012 Trip - Put Together by Mayan Families |
Photo Journal of November Trip -
Sunday to Tuesday
Woman from San Antonio Palopo with the chicken feed wrapped up on her head. |
Receiving chickens. |
Our boxes arriving at Mayan Families - these are tough for 2 of our guys to move around - I can't believe he is carrying them on his back. |
John serving the elderly in San Jorge. |
John helping a woman down a step. Many of these women climb a mountain to get back and forth to their homes from the Elderly Feeding Program. Some are even barefoot. |
Sandy blowing bubbles while others install an ONIL stove. |
Kelly & Angela playing with the kids. |
Becky, Amanda, and Matt installing an ONIL stove in a home for the cook at the Mayan Families Elderly Program. |
The mother is supporting the 6 children on her own as her husband died. The house was built by donors for the woman and her family. The stove pipe will be finished later. |
The reason we love shoe donations! |
John and Sandy seeing Maria, their sponsored student, when we return to the offices to give out food baskets. |
Tom reuniting with the family that the guys had put a kitchen in during the July 2011 trip. |
Organizing the food baskets. |
A family from Agua Escondida receiving a food basket. At least several of them were wearing the same clothes when we saw them 2 days later. |
Another family receiving a food basket. |
Cutie pie! |
We are all amazed at the size of the carrots! |
Tom & Paul cutting up cardboard to be used as a base for the preschool graduation gifts for the children. |
Angela wrapping the base for the graduation gifts. A beanie baby and piece of candy were later put on top of the base. |
Monday night's dinner at the Circus Bar. |
On Tuesday morning, Juan was at our hotel waiting for us with the pens we had ordered. He had come from Chichicastenango - about an hour away from Pana. He remembers Angela & Matt each time we come back. He goes to school on Saturdays. |
Amanda carrying a beam for the house we were building. |
We had to remove the rocks and debris from the house so the floor could be cemented. It took 3 men over a week and a half to level the area for the house - by hand. |
Tom & Paul leveling the ground in the bedroom so it can be cemented. Eight people will live in this one bedroom house - but it is better than what they are coming from - 23 living in a 2 bedroom home. |
Matt carrying a bucket of sand from an area down the hill below the home. We probably carried 75 buckets - it was hard work! |
A typical campfire cooking area. |
Some of the Ibate kids with Jacob & Eli. (Freddy, Donny, Julia, Marivela, and Oscar) |
Taking some time to play with the littlest girl. |
A little girl and her play things... |
Freddy helping to shovel the rocks. The kids came on their own and started helping us. |
A little girl hanging laundry. |
The ONIL stove is being used in the house next to where we were working. |
Paul & Eli taking a break - it was hot working on the house! |
Back at the Mayan Families office we made peanut butter sandwiches - and had bananas and watermelon for lunch. |
After lunch we started sorting through the donations that had arrived in our boxes. Amanda started sorting through the shoes. |
The National AYSO shirts made it! Bartelo, the Mayan Families office caretaker, modeled one for us. |
Becky & Eli took a break to pet one of the many Mayan Families' rescued dogs that are roaming around. |
The Mayan Families' employees worked with us to put together 110 food bags for the children at the Chukmuk and El Barranco preschools. |
A big box filled with the food bags. |
For dinner we went to Jose Pinguinos for a cultural dinner. We learned about the marimba, clothing of Guatemala, and how to make tortillas. |
We all had a typical Guatemalan dish - pepian with rice and tortillas. |
More to come later from the rest of the week! |
