Guatemalan Cloth
Dear Friends,

Two months from today our group will be flying to Guatemala! It is hard to believe, but the group is excited!  Our bags will be packed full...read below to see what special delivery we will be making.

Information on our most current fundraiser, Yankee Candles, is included.  We share updates on our latest craft fair and the "Chicken Drive."

If you have been thinking about how you can make a difference, take a look at the blurb on ONIL stoves - you could literally save a life!

Lots more info...just keep reading!
Santa Is In Need of a Suit!

Each year Santa visits Guatemala and helps Mayan Families (our host organization while we are in Guatemala) hand out donated toys to over 5,000 little boys and girls.  These gifts are all donated and many will be the only toys or dolls that these children will receive all year.

Mayan Families made a plea for a new Santa Suit (or two) as they had heard the one Santa would be wearing this year was in need of serious repair.  Cotton stuffing was being used as a wig and santa's bag was a black trash bag...  They were hoping someone could bring it to Guatemala before December.

Well, that seemed about perfect since we will be traveling in November!  So Santa's new garb will be flying with us to Guatemala!

If anyone would like to donate to the Santa Suits, we would greatly appreciate it.  Each full outfit (suit, belt, gloves, boot covers, hat, padding, wig/beard, bag, bell, and glasses) will cost $375.

Do You Want to Save a Life?

An ONIL Stove does just that!  Typically families cook over an open fire, often in their home. One in five children die in Guatemala before the age of 5 years of age.  Many of those deaths can be attributed to respiratory issues. By installing an ONIL Stove the harmful smoke and carbon monoxide are vented out of the home. There are additional benefits such as fewer burns - imagine small children running around in a one-room house with an open fire.  The stoves require 60-70% less wood - so fewer trees are cut down.  This is a big deal on the mountainous land where the trees help stabilize the land and prevent mudslides.
Many more pictures and detail can be found at: ONIL Stove Blog and ONIL Stove Website.

We hope to install 18 stoves during the November trip. Each stove costs $170 and the donation is tax-deductible.

If you are looking for a gift for a special person or group of people that have everything, an ONIL Stove would be a wonderful "gift in honor of."  We will provide a card, along with a picture and information on the family that receives it so you can give it to the person receiving the "In honor gift."

Yankee Candle Fundraiser

We are currently selling Yankee Candles to raise money for our activities in Guatemala.  We will be selling them through October 12th, and they will be back by Thanksgiving.  If you are interested, contact Beki Brooks or Angela Grussing.  To view the catalog on-line, click Yankee Candle Fall Catalog.

Labor Day Craft Show

We set up at our first craft fair of the season over Labor Day Weekend in Fairfield Glade (near Crossville). Despite getting rained out on Sunday, we had an excellent sale!

Joanie, David, Rachel & Henna all helped out, and we found out that Joanie had missed her calling as a sales lady! :)

Chickens Update
Chickens 1
Thank you to the families sponsoring a flock of chickens
for a family!

It is not too late!
The cost of one chicken is $15 and the cost for a family to have all 3 chickens is $45.

For everyone that donates $45 for a family to have 3 chickens, we will provide you with a picture of the family and a short write-up of their circumstances.

Ever Wonder Where Guatemala Is?

Guatemala is about a 4 hour plane ride from Knoxville, TN.  It is just south of Mexico and to the west of Belize.

We fly into Guatemala City (red square) and then drive 3-4 hours to Lake Atitlan (directly to the west of Guatemala City.  On our last day in Guatemala we will be in Antigua, Guatemala. Just to the southwest of Guatemala City.

San Jorge

On the Monday after we get to Guatemala, we are planning on serving a meal to an elderly group of individuals in San Jorge.

San Jorge is a short drive from Panajachel, Lake Atitlan (our home base).  It is built into the mountainside and in the rainy season there is the threat of mudslides.

It is not a touristy town like Panajachel.  Many of the people are day laborers and commute to Panajachel or the Solola (the "capital" of the region) for work.
Duck Duck Goose Gives Back!

Duck Duck Goose Consignment Sale is very generous after each of their sales!  They donate the remaining clothes that are not picked up to many charities around East Tennessee.  We are lucky to be one of the charities that they donate to after each sale.

Last Spring we came home with a van load of clothes for the children of Guatemala!

Their fall sale is being held September 20th-22nd at the old Goody's Warehouse on Parkside Drive.  More information can be found at: Duck Duck Goose.
