Guatemalan Cloth
Dear Friends,

We will be in Guatemala in three months and on the tail end of our service trip!  But before we get there we have lots to do!

To learn about how you can contribute with chickens, take a look below.  Do you want a visual on where we work or to learn about the village of El Barranco?  Just continue reading.  We survived our packing party and received a wonderful donation from the soccer organization of AYSO...and we have our first craft fair in one week!

Lots of info...enjoy the read!

Chickens Say "Bawk Bawk", We Say "Do you want to sponsor one?"

In all seriousness, chicken eggs can feed hungry bellies and provide much needed protein for families.  What makes it an even better gift is that it is completely replenishable for several years...the chickens just keep laying eggs. :)Chickens 1

We hope to provide 40 families with 3 chickens each.  The families will also receive a first batch of feed for the chickens.  The cost of one chicken is $15 and the cost for a family to have all 3 chickens is $45.
Chickens 3
For everyone that donates $45 for a family to have 3 chickens, we will provide you with a picture of the family and a short write-up of their circumstances.

Please thoughtfully consider donating for a family to have 3 chickens - or even just 1.  This can be the perfect Christmas or Hanukkah gift for the person that has everything - and will be just in time for the holidays!

Ever Wonder Where We Work?

When we are in Guatemala we mainly work in the Highlands Area around Lake Atitlan.  This is a mainly indigenous area, except for Pana where there are a lot of ex-pats.

Our main "base" is in Panajachel and is where the offices of Mayan Families (our host) are located.

On Sunday we will travel to Santa Cruz La Laguna for breakfast, and then on to Santiago Atitlan via boat for some sightseeing.

We will travel to San Jorge on Monday to install ONIL Stoves and to feed the Elderly.  We will also be in Panajachel to give out food baskets and chickens.

On Wednesday, we will travel to Chukmuk to spend time in the preschool and installing ONIL stoves.

On Thursday, we will go to the village of El Barranco.

San Antonio Palopo is another village that we work in sometimes.

El Barranco

On Thanksgiving Day we will travel up the mountain and away from the lake area.  We will go through the main municipality of Solola and on down the road until we turn into a road that takes us straight into a cornfield.

On the way, we may see chickens, turkeys, dogs, or children peeking out from the stalks of corn.  In comparison to the other villages that we go to, El Barranco's terrain is flat.  It sure makes it easier to walk through the village!  All of the houses are very spread out in comparison to the other villages too.

During our visit, we will make memory books with the children, give out blankets, and install ONIL stoves.  We will also be treated to traditional dancing by the children of the village.  I wouldn't be surprised for an impromptu game of soccer to start in the courtyard of the school/community center.

I am sure we will have much to be thankful for during the day!

AYSO National Tournament Donates Jerseys!

The National Soccer Tournament for AYSO was held in Knoxville, TN during July.  Several thousand players came from as far away as Hawaii.  On one day, the kids had the chance to play on impromptu teams with players from all over the country.  Each of the players were given a new jersey to wear for their team.

After the games there were extra jerseys and t-shirts left over.  AYSO generously donated 333 jerseys and 1,738 shirts to Nuestros Niños, and they were part of our shipment that just left Knoxville yesterday!

 Thank you AYSO!
Packing Day

WE DID IT!  We sorted all of the donations! 21 adults helping, 16 kids playing, 15 hours, 2 meals, 1 birthday, and 22 boxes later - we finished packing all of the wonderful donations Nuestros Niños has received over the last year. These aren't small boxes either!  Medrano, our shipping company, picked the boxes up yesterday - so they are on their way to Guatemala.

Take a look at the blog about our fun packing day:Packing Day.

Fairfield Glade Craft Fair

Over Labor Day weekend we will be doing our first craft fair of the season.  So if you have friends or family in the Crossville/Cookeville/Fairfield Glade area - send them our way.  We will be at the Fairfield Glade Community Center on Saturday and Sunday.

To leave you with a quote from Edward Everett Hale:

"I am only one,
but still I am one.
I cannot do everything,
but still I can do something;
and because I cannot do everything,
I will not refuse to do something I can do."

Have a wonderful day!
